Pinning Down Time

Does time seem to run away from you? I'm never sure where the days go. As a kid I felt the summer days stretch on forever without much distinction. But now it seems hard to hold onto even this morning.

According an NPR story, one theory on why time flies as you get older is that when you're young, you experience everything for the first time and it takes your brain longer to process new encounters. Whether it's the first time you got drunk or kissed someone, it's all new. When you've kissed your hundredth kiss or gotten drunk too many times, you already know what those experiences will feel like. Your mind fills in the blanks. And time goes by ever faster.

Maybe we can keep time on a leash, or on a band. I found a stockpile of watch bands in the garage. What to do with them since they are without their watch faces? They are sadly stuck in limbo.

The bands must have come the gift shop we owned in the early 80s, also the source of the Sex Plug.

Awww that theory makes me sad. I want to be a born again experiencer and feel everything like it was the first time again. I hate thinking I am not feeling it at 100% but filling in. I guess that could be a perk to amnesia or memory loss? Although, I watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Pretty in Pink on the big screen for the first time in 20 years or so and that was truly a virginal experience even though I had seen both millions of times over the years on tv. The evening did last forever and it was extra special because I viewed both with the guy of my dreams ( not like when I was 15 wondering where was the guy of my dreams and how I had no date for both movies). Maybe if enough time passes and you make minor changes, it's all brand new again?! I hope so!

Jeez what didn't your family do in the 80s? Love your blog, btw.

tera, thanks for sharing your story. i wonder if the trick to experiencing everything new again is to do it all again with that someone extra special. because it is new for you and there is extra meaning because it is shared. minor changes, or making tricking the mind into thinking you've just been born again and again.

pineapplemint, we did do a lot in the 80s! I think everyone did actually. it was a productive, tumultuous decade!

the whole time passing faster as we get older theory...i think that may be right. i also think the fact that when we are 5, one year is a 5th of our life and when we are older, one year is so much less of a portion of our entire life. those together....time flies!!!!

Slightly off-topic, but you've inspired me to convince my mom (and grandmom ... and everyone else in my family) to take out the old pictures and make with the memories. It's fascinating how interesting parental units' lives can be-- and not just because of the silly clothes. (:
